Andrew Jackson Phillips enlisted in the Confederacy at Shelby Depot, November 1861. He was captured by Grant's Army when Ft. Donaldson fell on Feb. 16, 1862. Jackson and his fellow soldiers were taken to Camp Butler, Springfield, IL as prisoners of war. He was there until Sept. 23, 1862 when sent to Vicksburg, MS to be exchanged. He was discharged Oct. 15, 1862 at the age of 21.
