ARCH GAMMILL, a well known farmer of the Sixth District, was born March 25, 1825, in Marshall County, Tex. [Tenn.?], and came to Hardin County in 1838 with his father James Gammill, who was a native of North Carolina, a farmer by occupation; he married Miss Hester Bedell by whom he had eighteen children, of whom subject of this sketch is the thirteenth. Arch Gammill, received such education as the common schools of Marshall County afforded; has been a farmer since his boyhood. He was married August 13, 1846, to Miss Elizabeth Long a native of South Carolina; but a resident of Hardin County since childhood. To their union twelve children have been born, of whom there are living Franklyn; Miles C.; Moses; Joseph; Columbus; Paralee, the wife of N. G. Baker (a farmer of Hardin County); Samantha, wife of Preston Phillips (farmer of same county); Sallie, wife of J. Couch, also a farmer in Hardin County. The children deceased are James, Pinkney, Alford and Samuel. Franklyn married Miss Mary Shell, a native of the county, and Miles C. was united to Miss Alice Smoot. Mr. Gammill is a stanch Republican, a man of good moral habits and worthy citizen who is esteemed by all who know him.
