Joe Calvin Montgomery was born in South Carolina and moved to Decatur Co. TN with his mother, Mary to live near his grandfather, David between 1834 and 1839. The name of Joe's father is not known but family tradition holds that it was a man named Haney. Joe lived with Montgomery relatives following his Mother's death around 1851 until striking out on his own sometime after 1860. He traveled as far west as Texas before returning to Decatur Co. to marry Lucy Margaret Moore in 1879. They had seven children with five surviving to adulthood, marrying and having offspring.

Joe earned a living for his family working in a saloon in Decaturville. He was also a partner with his brother Robert Eason in land holdings in Decatur Co. TN. He died in 1891 at the age of 57 and is buried at the Sardis Ridge Cemetery along with his wife and two of his children.

In the 1860 census, J. C. Montgomery, age 26, is living in the John Walker household. There is also a female, S. Montgomery, age 25 living in the Walker household. This doesn't match exactly but it may very well be Joe Montgomery's sister, Martha.

In the 1870 census, J. C. Montgomery, age 34, is living in the Prudence Rushing household in Navarro Co. TX. Prudence and her husband Richard moved from District 10 in Decatur Co. TN to Navarro Co. TX between 1850 and 1860.

On November 10, 1883, J. C. Montgomery and Robert W. Eason purchased three tracts of land totalling 201.5 acres from W. W. Butler and wife E. J. Butler; C. C. Butler and wife M. E. Butler for $600. The land was located on Lime Kiln Branch and Rushings Creek in Decatur Co. TN. One of the tracts containing 52.5 acres was later sold to M. A. White on November 29, 1889 for $157.
