James Maners was born in Decatur County, Tennessee, May 15, 1843. There are no records of his parents. He was raised by the Absolom Adkisson Family of Decatur County. He enlisted in the Confederate Army on November 25, 1861. He served 12 months in the 51st and/or 52nd Regiment of the Tennessee Infantry. He was discharged, honorably, for reason of disability and smallness. Discharge records indicae (sic) that, at the time of his discharge, he was 21 years old, 5' 3-3/4" tall, and had dark complexion and blue eyes.
