Mrs. Flora Gilbert, Wife of Conductor Mrs. Flora Eason Gilbert, 70, wife of concert violinist and conductor Noel Gilbert, 5001 Walnut Grove, died at Baptist Hospital at 5:01 a.m. today after a long illness. Mrs. Gilbert, an honor graduate of Union University at Jackson, Tenn., and former school teacher, was member of the family long identified with musical development in Memphis. Her husband's career as a violinist and conductor dates to the 1920s when Mr. Gilbert played at the old Palace and Orpheum theaters. He was a principal performer for the old Memphis Open Air Theater of the 1930s and has been conductor for the currently popular summer concert series in Overton Park and serves as assistant concert master for Memphis Symphony Orchestra. The couple's three children, Joan Gilbert of Memphis, Michael Gilbert of New York and Robert Gilbert of Tokyo, Japan are well known musicians. Miss Gilbert teaches piano at Memphis State University, is a concert pianist and formerly played violin in the Memphis Symphony Orchestra; Michael Gilbert is violinist with the New York Philharmonic and Robert Gilbert plays first horn in the Japan Philharmonic. Mrs. Gilbert also leaves a sister, Hattie Eason of Memphis; a brother Joe Eason of Bolivar, Tenn.; and three grandchildren. The family requests any memorials be sent to the American Cancer Society. Memphis Funeral Home Popular Chapel is in charge of services.
